A few habits keep ER32 holders performing: use high-precision collets on finishing operations, clean the collet, nut, and taper before every clamp, avoid clamping at the very top or bottom of a collet's range (pick the closer nominal size instead), and replace collets after visible wear or every 12 to 18 months in production.
Pull studs don't get much attention until one fails. A low-quality pull stud can break under load and release the tool mid-cut, deform the spindle gripper, or cause chatter that ruins your finish.

Never reuse a pull stud that shows wear or impact marks. Replace one after any crash or abnormal vibration event, and torque it to the specified value, usually 70–90 Nm, with a calibrated torque wrench.
Hydraulic holders clamp the tool with pressurized fluid distributed evenly around the shank. That gets you runout as low as 2 microns and strong vibration damping, which is exactly what high-speed finishing and reaming need.
They're worth the extra cost when the finish requirement is tight (Ra ≤ 0.4 μm), when you're machining molds, dies, or aerospace parts at micro-precision, or when a long tool overhang is putting you at risk of chatter.

The price tag is higher than an ER32 or side lock holder, but shops usually recover it through less tool breakage, lower scrap, and tool life extended by 20 to 40%.
A side lock (weldon) holder locks the end mill mechanically, using a flat ground into the shank and a radial set screw. Reach for this when radial cutting forces are heavy, roughing passes are pulling high chip loads, or tool pull-out simply can't happen.

Side lock holders won't slip under high torque, and they suit roughing end mills and indexable cutters well. The tradeoff is higher runout than ER or hydraulic systems, so they're not the right pick for fine finishing or micro tools.

Start with your machine type and spindle interface. BT30 suits light, high-speed operations. BT40 and CAT40 cover general-purpose and heavy-duty milling. HSK is for high-end, high-speed finishing.

Keep the spindle taper, holder, collet, and nut clean and free of dust, oil, and chips. Check pull studs regularly and replace them at the first sign of wear, corrosion, or damage. Measure runout with a dial indicator, and treat anything above 10µm as something that needs attention for general machining. Use a torque wrench on collet nuts and pull studs rather than tightening by feel. And if you're running above 8,000 RPM, use balanced holders, no exceptions.
